WHAT IS HAPPINESS?
“We tend to forget that happiness doesn’t come as a result of getting something we don’t have, but rather of recognizing and appreciating what we do have.”
Many say or believe that happiness is all that money can buy. I couldn’t disagree but I also think that happiness can be found in lots of things that money can’t buy. It is true that you can find yourself in an excellent state of mind when you buy a new car, for example, or when you win the lottery. But for me, happiness stays in small things. For example, I feel happy whenever I eat chocolate or when I hear a song I love.
So, what is happiness? As Frederick Keonig said, “happiness doesn’t come as a result of getting something we don’t have”. What I understand from this statement is that we don’t have to run all our lives after happiness. We need to stop chasing it or else we might miss it. Happiness is everywhere, happiness is chocolate, happiness is in the eyes of your loved one, in a smile of a blonde little girl, in the heart of our mothers, in a sunny day of a beautiful spring, in the waves of the sea, happiness is seeing someone appreciates you and I can go that way for another 300 pages.
So what is the best way to be happy? First of all, and I think this is the most important thing, we need to stop worrying about what others think of our activities, of ourselves. Nobody is living our lives but us. You and only you are the most important person in your life and if you didn’t saw that yet, you should start seeing it. No matter how much you love or you care about a person, you come first no matter what. And that, that I believe is the key to happiness. Second of all, in order to be happy you need to healthy. You got to quit smoking, you got to give up junk food and start exercise. Go to the gym, put on your earphones and go for a jog. A healthy life is a happy life. Another important thing when it comes to happiness is having friends. And by friends I mean real friends. Those who come at your place holding a bottle of vodka when you’re depressed, those who listen to you when you have something to say, those on whom shoulder you can cry on whenever you need to, those who laugh with you, those who are with you no matter what decision you want to take.
Whoever said that happiness is a thing that cannot be touched couldn’t be more wrong. Happiness is everywhere, it surrounds us. You only have to see it. Stop wondering if you are beautiful enough, if you are smart enough, if you are good enough for the people around. Just live your life because you only have one (probably). Anyway, you should seize the moment. That’s what makes you happy after all. Whenever you feel like saying “I love you” say it. Whenever you feel sorry about doing something bad apologize. If you want someone to know how you feel about them, call and tell them. Whatever you want to do just go with it!
What else is happiness? Happiness is your first kiss, happiness is a hug (it was actually scientifically proved that a 20 minutes hug decreases depression), happiness is dancing in the rain, happiness is finding yourself in a novel, happiness is not having to set an alarm for the next day, happiness is watching a meteor shower in a summer night, happiness is watching a sunset or a sunrise in the mountains, happiness is kissing your loved one on new year’s Eve.
These being said, happiness stays in small things. I know it may sound like a cliché but it is obvious that most of the things that make you happy can’t be bought. It is true that a new smartphone, or a smart TV, or a luxurious vacation makes you feel somehow happy, but you can’t compare that to the smile of your lover when he looks into your eyes and says “I love you”, or the laughter of your baby girl when you tickle her, or that feeling you get when you run in the rain in the summer after a long hot day. Happiness is true, happiness is wherever we, wherever you are.
